Communication and therapy through music
Hampshire MusicSpace -
Annual Conference 2008 Tony is a music
therapist whose expertise is of international reputation, and we are thrilled to
have him with us in Hampshire on this occasion. His presentation
will have a largely practical content and will provide practice tools for the
participants that are intended to sustain the creativity of improvisation while
adding some clear structure and method to its clinical application. Examples of his work on film will be included, and signed copies of his
book ‘Improvisation’ published by
Jessica Kingsley 2004 will be available for purchase. Risenga
Makondo: African musician trained in music therapy Risenga’s practical workshop will
provide fresh ways of approaching improvisation from a non-European cultural
perspective. In: The Call or ‘Mbizo’, he invites us to … ‘Come
along and join me. I will share with you an African musical feast. The aim of
this musical feast is to make sure that all will leave the workshop with a
broader understanding of cultural diversity that hopefully they can take away
with them to use in their music therapy. The feast will be on one plate. We will all sit in a circle and use our
hands to eat. There will be water to wash your hands before dinner, however
after dinner you may use the grass to wipe your hands or you can lick your
fingers clean. Of course people may come from other cultures where each person
has their own plate with a fork and knife. So we must gently explain our way of
life. He or she must enjoy this sharing experience of our feast, let them feel
at home and welcome.’ Louise will
present her approaches and findings regarding improvisation in music therapy
across different client groups, including the use of technology. Martin’s practical workshop: ‘What can I do with that?’ will explore different ways of working with a musical idea. Cathy will
present client responses to improvisation in an acute mental health setting. music of an improvisational nature for: harps Owain
