Highly Anticipated Pasadena Showcase House of Design Returns Sunday – Pasadena Weekendr

This year’s Pasadena Showcase House of Design — a 10-bedroom, 12-bathroom, 12,260-square-foot Tudor Revival home on Oaklawn Avenue in South Pasadena — includes 21 interior designers and three exterior and landscape designers . The stately 1905 mansion anchors a planned Greene & Greene Historic District of century-old homes.

The spectacular metamorphosis opens to the public to visit this sunday april 24.

Like every Showcase House each year, the Hawgood House provided unique opportunities for local designers to showcase new design approaches and concepts, as well as appliances and innovations.

Designer Denise Bosley, for example, chose to redesign the laundry room, of all places, but in her vision, the room became the “laundry cafe.”

“They wanted it to be a laundry room, but I thought it was such a big space with all the windows, it would be a shame to have it just like that, and it’s such a big space.”

Noting the large space and counter and work area, Bosley added, “Now it’s a destination room. So you can work at the office we have here. And then we also have a coffee bar.

The bedroom also has a pull-out ironing board hidden in the sideboard, as well as a farmhouse sink, matching the original English country style of the house.

In addition to these features there are original old English country style windows, which swing inwards and are fixed to the ceiling with hooks, for those hot summer afternoons.

“That was another reason I chose this room,” Bosley said.

Karen Billman designs the “fit stop bathroom,” a combination of a small workout room featuring an Echelon Digital rowing machine and workout mirror, and a collection of hand weights adjacent to a more traditional bathroom.

The walls are covered in professional-grade fabric wallpaper that can withstand any workout.

“You can throw water or bleach on it, and it will still stay clean,” Billman said. “It will be perfect for a gym and they usually use it for theaters, but we decided to use it because you sweat here, don’t you? And sometimes you might spill water .

The flooring for the gym mat is provided by Johnson Fitness and Wellness in Pasadena, which also provided the rowing machine and medicine balls.

Designer Jeanne K. Chung, of cozystylechic.comchose to redo the kitchen, accepting the challenge it offered him.

Says Chung Monday, “It’s a modern take on the traditional English kitchen, but we’ve added today’s modern appliances to it.”

As Chung admitted, “It wasn’t an easy piece to work with. I believe it was an addition or it was a renovation in the 1950s, and it hadn’t been touched since then. So it was very separate from the rest of the house.

Chung wanted to “bring the kitchen back to flow with the rest of the house. And our inspiration was traditional English Tudor architecture. Correct, of course. Chung also brought in some metals that were popular in the early 1900s.

“Silver finishes are also gaining popularity right now,” she pointed out. “So believe it or not, it’s a trend.”

Built for Mr. Harry Hawgood, an English civil engineer who designed railways and waterways around the world, the house’s concrete construction bypassed the popular timber frame of the time, leading many architectural observers to assume that Mr. Hawgood himself was the architect.

With concrete construction, the house contains rich wooden interiors and intriguing period details, including stained glass windows, wood-beamed ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling travertine fireplaces. Landscaped sunken gardens surround the house with scenic pathways leading to the hidden edges of the property.

Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, has supported local music and arts programs since 1948. With more than 200 members, the organization primarily raises funds from Showcase House, which has provided more than $23 million to nonprofit organizations, in support of music education, scholarships, concerts and music therapy.
