Comedian and actress Jennifer Saunders presents a new Sunday night series on Classic FM, opening up and exploring the wonderful world of opera, with English National Opera.
Award-winning comedian and actress Jennifer Saunders is set to host a flagship new Sunday series on Classic FM, introducing listeners to the world of opera in all its wonder.
In collaboration with English National Opera (ENO), From Couch to Opera House (in 7 weeks) will launch on Sunday March 6 at 9pm and is the latest in a series of specially commissioned programs to celebrate Classic FM’s 30th anniversary. .
Jennifer will present the series on Classic FM after completing her own Opera Challenge in 2021 with ENO. Last March, she was one of five actresses to learn Puccini’s iconic aria “Nessun Dorma” in a very impressive way. Turandot in just 24 hours, and play it live on TV for charity.
Through seven episodes of her new Classic FM show, Jennifer aims to demystify the genre for anyone new to opera, taking you by the hand and guiding you through the doors of virtual opera, through the foyer and finally settling into the Grand Cercle for the highly anticipated performance.

Each hour-long program will focus on a different theme, ranging from love (both satisfied and unrequited), conflict and turmoil to comedy.
Along the way, there will be relevant and rich accompaniment of operatic music spanning five centuries, from Claudio Monteverdi in the early 17th century to Stephen Sondheim in the 20th century. Beginner in opera or long-time fan of the genre, there will be something for everyone.
Jennifer Saunders said: “Having dipped my toe into the world of opera last year for a wonderful charity cause and English National Opera, I am delighted to present this new series on Classic FM without having to sing. “

Jennifer begins her series with one of the greatest operas ever written: that of Mozart Don Giovannia storyline filled with enough romantic activity, salacious seduction and bloodthirsty revenge to top any soap opera.
