In their conversation with PEOPLE (the TV show!) Ferrell had nothing but praise for his co-star on Monday.
“The biggest takeaway for me was how great a actor Paul is,” Ferrell said. “To sort of get the needle to thread between this character who is, at first, very loving and sincere as a therapist, who really helps Marty stand up for himself and become a stronger person. And then slowly pull that back and realizing that he has ulterior motives that are less than honorable is a difficult performance to give, and he does it brilliantly.

Rudd reflected on how he identified with one of his darkest roles to date. “I didn’t really consider him a bad guy, although I think most people probably will,” he said. “For me, I play a complex and nuanced person who has their own difficulties and tries to navigate all of it.”
Ferrell also recounted meeting the real Marty for research. “We kind of asked, why aren’t you more ashamed about this? Why are you ready to share your story? ” he said.
